Your Instructor
My name is Dirie Ahmed. I’m a native English speaker who began to learn Arabic for the first time in my life, from scratch, at the age of 19.
More than ten years later and now I’m an Arabic language instructor, translator, youth coordinator and khateeb in the Greater Toronto Area. My life is all about online learning and making knowledge more accessible to the masses. My philosophy on learning is taken from the Quranic verse, “Say, (O Prophet,) ‘Are those who know equal to those who do not know?’” (39:9 — the Clear Quran). It’s knowledge and its application that separates us, not race, ethnicity, or wealth.
My Arabic students come from all walks of live. I’ve taught 13 years olds all the way to women in their mid to late 60’s (they informed me of their age, I know to never ask a woman how old she is). I’ve taught Google employees to carpenters. I believe that Arabic should be accessible to all as the Quran is a message for all.
I have a two-year certificate in Arabic Language, one-year diploma in Arabic and Islamic Studies, and a BA in Islamic Law. Along side these certificates/degrees, I also have a certificate from the author of Arabiyyah Bayna Yadayk to teach his series. In addition to these Arabic related credentials, I also have a CELTA in teaching English and have done so for years.
Through my struggle of learning of Arabic and extensive travel, I have believe I have perfected a curriculum designed to help those who are learning Arabic as a second language. I know what you’re going through and I can help.
My interests besides Arabic and Islamic Sciences include Educational Technology, learning design, learning theories, e-learning design, and UX design.
On a personal note, I’m also a full-time coffee drinker.
